Recursive Exchange is a fanwork exchange for requesting fanfiction and fanart of other fanworks! Recursive fanfiction is frequently called "fic of fic" and (in a fannish context) recursion essentially means treating a fanwork as a canon source material.

Schedule

  • Signups open (noms still open): April 27th
  • Nominations close: May 3rd
  • Signups close: May 4th
  • Assignments out: ideally May 7th
  • Assignments due: June 15th
  • Work reveals: June 22nd

All closing times, opening times, and deadlines are 10pm EDT.

Information

A gift exchange is a fanwork challenge where participants sign up to create a fanwork and in return receive a fanwork as a gift. For this exchange, participants may create/receive a fic of 1000 words or a finished piece of drawn art.

The stages of the exchange are:

  • Nominations — the mods collect information about works participants want to request and build a tagset.
  • Sign ups — once we have a tagset, participants fill out a sign up form on AO3 that includes offers and requests. For this exchange, nominations stay open during this time as we expect people will need to wait for permission before nominating for some of their desired fanworks.
  • Matching — the mods use the AO3 challenges system to match participants based on requested tags
  • Assignments/creation period — participants receive an email listing all of their assigned recipient's requests; they must create one (1) fanwork matching the requirements laid out below or else default.
  • Due date/reveals — assuming all gifts are in, the collection is revealed but kept anonymous for 1 week. If there are outstanding pinch hits, we will keep the collection unrevealed until all pinch hits are filled.

Below there's information specific to nominations, sign ups, assignments, and posting that you will definitely need. You can also find a glossary that should be helpful if you're new to talking about recursive fic and an FAQ!

Please feel free to ask the mods lots of questions! You can comment on this post or email recursiveexchange@protonmail.com — but please use email for anything that might reveal who you've been assigned to.

Pinch hits are requests in search of a creator! They have all the same rules as assignments — respecting DNWs and length minimums included! You can find information on assignment minimums here. These are due on June 21st 10PM Eastern.

To pick up a pinch hit, comment below with

  1. The PH you want
  2. your AO3 username (Even if your Dreamwidth username is the same as your AO3, please just tell us your AO3 name so we can be sure!)

All comments are screened to keep pinch hitters secret! If you comment anonymously you won't be able to see replies to your comment, but you will know you got it if you get an email from AO3 saying it's been assigned to you.

Due to the complexity of nominations, we will be nominating via a google form, and clarifications will happen via email rather than announcement on the comm. If you can't use google forms, please email us at recursiveexchange@protonmail.com and we'll sort through your nominations via email.

(Nominating directly to the tagset won't be allowed because we need lots of information and it's better if we collect it all at once. The google form saves us from data entry and you from struggling to correctly format your own tags.)

If you have any questions about nominations, please ask! We will answer comments on this post & by email.

Information required to nominate:

  • Your email — If you don't want us contacting you for nominations clarification or if you're commenting signed-in, you can leave this blank.
  • Fanwork title — what is the fanwork called? For series you can use the series name. If the fanwork is untitled, a brief description or summary is fine, keeping in mind the tag we create will need to be 100 characters or less.
  • Fanwork creator — What username was the fanwork posted under?
  • Parent series abbreviation — This is only needed if you're nominating a specific fic inside a larger fic series. It should be as short as possible.
  • Fanwork medium — Is it fic? Art? Vid? Gifset?
  • Fanwork link — Where can the fanwork be found?
  • Parent fandom — What fandom was the fanwork created for? Please try to use AO3 canonicals. Crossovers should be given in the format Fandom A/Fandom B, although they'll go under "Crossover Fandom" in the tagset.
  • Fanwork permission link — We need a link to a place where the creator has publicly said they're okay with further transformation of their work, preferably on the same site the work is posted on or on an account the creator has linked. (The permission link will not be included in any public tagset information, it is only used for verification.)
  • Main ship/characters — You will be matching on if you want fic about the main ship/characters or side characters, and also this will help people know if they're interested in the work. If you provide just a pairing, we will assume the characters in the pairing are the main characters. If you are nominating original works, please provide the pairing category at the beginning of the tag, and then the descriptive version of the ship tag. A properly formatted OW ship would look like "(F/F) Ghost/Nun" or "(Gen) Ghost & Nun"
  • Additional information — Any other information you think mods need about this nomination. On the google form information put in this category is only visible to the mods.

Hello! This is a post for directing participants to places where they can find fanworks to nominate in the exchange and permission statements to go with. Essentially, a canon promo post! It's also where creators can give permission for recursion and let us know their work(s) are available.

This is a purely optional step for the exchange! After posting here, you still need to nominate individual works. Please feel free to browse and discuss/coordinate nominations, but top-level comments should be for promos only.

Promo Post

Before you make your promo post, here are some things to consider:

  • Aside from individual participants' DNWs on their requests, we aren't able to enforce any restrictions on the contents or format of the recursive works created for this exchange.
  • We also will not restrict who requests/offers to create for nominated fanworks.
  • Please make sure your permission statement allows for fic and art, at minimum!
  • All recursive works posted to this exchange will be required to use the "Inspired by" feature to link back to the work they are recursing. You do not have to approve the link.
A promo post should include:
  • a link to a permission statement
  • the username used to post the work(s) you're letting us know are eligible
  • the relevant fandom(s) and medium(s) — if it's a lot of fandoms, feel free to summarize.
  • links to the work(s).
Additionally:
  • You can give permission for just one work, or for all works, or somewhere in between.
  • You do not need to be a participant in the exchange to opt-in on this post.
  • You are welcome to comment anonymously without identifying yourself as the creator as long as you have a permission link.
  • Posting here does not nominate your work for the exchange! Specific works still need to be nominated via the nominations process. Nominations open on May 10th.

Example Promo Post

Your promo can be something as simple as, "Hi, I'm [username with link] on AO3, I post [fandom & medium] and my permission statement is found here: [link]" or you can do a full promo post.

 AO3 Collection

Creators have been revealed! Thanks again to everyone who participated in the second round of Recursive Exchange, and hung in with us through our delays. ❤ We're currently thinking that we will run this exchange again next year. The timing of the next round will depend on when it fits in the mods' schedules, so we'll keep you posted.

Thinking ahead to round three: if you no-show defaulted on your assignment, you will need to create a requalifying work if you want to sign up for the next round. Requalifying works are an assignment-length work that is either 1k or a clean sketch on unlined paper. Requalifying works:

  • can be created for any request
  • can be created for any nominated fanwork in the tagset, even if no one requested them
  • can be gifted to a person or to the collection
  • if you gift your requalifying work to someone's request, please heed their DNWs
  • all requalifying works need to use the "inspired by" function to credit the work that you have recursed.

If you have any questions about requalification, please feel free to email us at recursiveexchange@protonmail.com.

Hope to see everyone next year!!

  • Your gift contains a DNW that you had in your AO3 signup.

In the meanwhile, we hope you enjoy your gift and the collection as a whole!

The nomination form is now closed, and we're now counting down towards the end up signups. Signups close at 10:00pm EDT on May 26th.

Don't forget to finish prompts for any request that is still in progress, and to update any offers that were placeholders while you were deciding what you'd like to create for!

Just a quick reminder, nominations close on May 25th! If there is a fanwork or two that you just need to have, don't forget to nominate it before the May 25th deadline (10pm EDT)!

Since we're almost within 48 hours of signups closing, we will be tossing out any noms that have incomplete permission statements rather than querying nominators. PLEASE make sure the permission statement has permissions for (at minimum):

  • fanart
  • fanfic
  • with no content restrictions on the kinds of recursive works that are made
  • and no requirement that a recursive fanworker needs to comment/email/ask permission before recursing their works
  • Thank you!
