AO3 Collection

Creators have been revealed! Amazing work, everyone; and thanks again to everyone who participated in the inaugural round of the Recursive Exchange. We hope to run this exchange next year. The timing of the next round will depend on when it fits in the mods' schedules, so we'll keep you posted.

Thinking ahead to the next round: if you no-show defaulted on the exchange, you will need to create a requalifying work if you want to sign up for the next round. Requalifying works are an assignment-length work that is either 1k or a clean sketch on unlined paper. Requalifying works:

  • can be created for any request
  • can be created for any nominated fanwork in the tagset, even if no one requested them
  • can be gifted to a person or to the collection
  • if you gift your requalifying work to someone's request, please heed their DNWs
  • all requalifying works need to use the "inspired by" function to credit the work that you have recursed.

If you have any questions about requalification, please feel free to email us at recursiveexchange@protonmail.com.

Hope to see you guys next year!!

A big shout out to all of our creators & our pinch-hitters. Great work everyone! We hope that everyone enjoys their gifts.

Please reach out to us immediately at recursiveexchange@protonmail.com (and include your ao3 username) if any of the following happened:

  • You fulfilled an assignment on time but you have not received a gift.
  • Your gift is not for a recursed work that you requested.
  • Your gift contains a DNW that you had in your AO3 signup.

In the meanwhile, we hope you enjoy your gift and the collection as a whole!

Creators will be revealed one week from today.

Hey everyone! Signups and nominations for Recursive Exchange are now closed. We've run matching & contacted one person who we need to hear from before we can send out assignments. If your username starts with C, please check your email and get back to us in the next 24 hours.

Matching has otherwise gone smoothly, and we should be able to send out assignments before the weekend. We will keep you updated! :D

    QUESTION(S) TO OUR NOMINATIORS

We still have outstanding questions to our nominators. Please get back to us ASAP so we can accept these nominations into the tagset.

-Bloom by newamsterdam. The work is listed as a bang work with multiple collaborators. Please provide permission statements from all of the collaborators if you'd like us to accept it into the tagset.

-Halo Effect/Soldier's Heart by Alex51324. The permission statement only covers fanfic. Please provide a permission statement that covers fanart as well for it to be accepted into the tagset.

-Proportion in Bliss by meek-bookworm. The permission statement only covers fanfic. Please provide a permission statement that covers fanart as well for it to be accepted into the tagset.

For those of you wanting to browse requests in a spreadsheet format, we now have one available!

    Google Spreadsheet of Requests

Among the many lovely features of this spreadsheet are URLs/links to the requested fanwork(s). Something about the CSV import breaks the linking feature when multiple fanworks are requested in a single fandom, but the work link is still there to be copy/pasted to a new browser window.

The spreadsheet will be updated about once per day during signups.

Sign Up Form | AO3 Tagset | Airtable Tagset

Signups for Recursive Exchange are now open! Sign up info can be found on the AO3 signup form, and also in our rules post. Nominations will remain open during signups!! We will process nominations at least once a day. If you need something in order to complete your requests or offers, we recommend you get your nominations in at least 24 hours before signups close. We can't promise that we'll be looking at the spreadsheet to catch all last-day nominations in time for you to complete your signup! (countdown to when sign ups close).

We will have a spreadsheet of requests soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

    + + + +

Please note the absolute minimum to sign up is:

  • One request with 1 parent fandom with 2 fanworks from different creators, 1 medium, and 1 character category.
  • One offer with 1 parent fandom, 1 fanwork, 1 medium, and 1 character category that matches at least 1 request besides your own.

  • This means AT MINIMUM, you need to request 2 fanworks that were created by 2 different creators. These two fanworks CAN be in a single fandom. The offer minimum is one offer that matches someone else's request. If you can achieve that with one offer, you're golden!

Signups that don't meet this minimum threshhold will be contacted at the end of the signup period, and be given 24 hours to respond to our queries. We will ask people who do not meet the minimum requests to expand their requests to include at least two fanworks by two different authors. For people who do not match to another participant as a creator, we will ask you to expand your offers. After that, we will delete signups that do not meet the request/offer minimums.

The flipside to these low minimums is that if you are requesting less than 6 fanwork tags across 3 parent fandoms, and your pinch hit lingers until the day works are due (or one week if you were defaulted on less than a week before the due date) you will be asked to add additional parent fandoms/fanworks. If you don't want to add additional parent fandoms/fanworks, your pinch hit will stay up, but we won't hold up reveals for you. We will hold reveals until everyone who requests 3+ parent fandoms/6+fanworks has a gift. The caveat to the 3 fandoms/6 fanworks rule is for Original Works-only requests. If you request 6 different fanwork tags from Original Work, we will treat that as a full request.

If you have any questions about signups, please feel free to ask them here!

Airtable List Of Accepted Noms | Ao3 Tagset

We're currently caught up with nominations as of 10:00pm EDT on Sunday, May 16th. There are 171 fanworks in the tagset. We have a few outstanding issues that we have or will email a couple nominators about, but otherwise everything that's been nominated should be accepted! Nominations will remain open during sign-ups. We will try to process nominations as quickly as possible; if you need to nominate something, PLEASE give yourself at least 24 hours before signups close, as we may need to contact you in case of an incomplete permission statement or other nomination issue(s).

    Question(s) to our Nominatiors

We have one general question, and two specific nomination queries.

  • We've been accepting nominations into the tagset under canonical fandom headings, which means we have quite a few different Star Wars and Star Trek noms. For people in megafandoms with multiple fandom entries, do you currently like how your fandom(s) are broken up in the tagset? Will you have enough slots to request everything that you would like? If you have any comments or suggestions about how fandoms are currently accepted in the tagset, please leave them below!
  • To the nominator who nominated bloom by newamsterdam, the work is listed as a bang work with multiple collaborators. Please provide permission statements from all of the collaborators if you'd like us to accept it into the tagset!
  • To the nominator who nominated Halo Effect/Soldier's Heart by Alex51324, the permission statement only covers fanfic. Please provide a permission statement that covers fanart as well for it to be accepted into the tagset!
  • If you have a question or issue about your nominations, please let us know here.

    Additions to Tagset

We've added some Creator's Choice of nominated fanwork tags that will make it easy for you to request multiple fanworks across medium(s). Please use these tags only if you're okay with receiving ANYTHING IN THE TAGSET that your creator may choose.

Creators, please note: these tags apply only to fanworks that have been accepted for Recursive Exchange. These tags cannot be used to request fanworks that were not nominated/accepted to the tagset.

The current tags are under Any Fandom:
  • Creator's choice of nominated art - Relationship
  • Creator's choice of nominated fanwork in any medium - Relationship
  • Creator's choice of nominated fic - Relationship
  • Creator's choice of nominated fic series - Relationship
  • Creator's choice of nominated playlist - Relationship
  • Creator's choice of nominated vid - Relationship

  • If there are other Creator's Choice tags that you'd like to see in the tagset, please let us know!

We're underway with nominations, and we've emailed a few nominators with clarifications. Most of our issues have focused on permission statements. Specifically, what we've seen are permission statements that don't fully cover the kinds of transformative work people may be requesting in this event.

If you are nominating a work for this event, the transformative work statement from the creator needs to say yes to a minimum of fanart and fanfic. Even if you plan to request only fanfic, or only fanart, you may not be the only person who requests a specific nomination. Therefore, everything in the tagset must have permission granted for both mediums. And that permission needs to be granted without any caveats about needing to contact the fanwork creator before making transformative works.

Types of statements that are okay:

  • Someone says blanket yes to all transformative works.
  • Yes to fic of fic, to fanart, and to other mediums.
  • Someone says "do whatever, just link me! :D".
  • Someone says, "I'm excited to see what you make. Credit me please!"
  • Someone says, "I believe in the give me credit, don't seek permission model of fandom."
  • Someone says, "you can make recursive work of my fic, but finishing my WIPs is not allowed." This is acceptable for this event, because we ban requests to "write the end of the fic" for incomplete works.
  • Types of statements where we will ask for further clarification:

  • Someone says yes to "remixes" and fanart. Remixes and recursive fanfic aren't always the same thing. We will usually ask for the nominator to reach out and ask about whether transformative fic or "fic of fic" is okay.
  • Someone says yes to fanart, podfics, and translations but no mention of fic.
  • Someone says yes to fic of their work, with no statement about fanart.
  • Types of statements where we may reject the nomination:

  • Someone says people have to specifically contact them before making a fanwork to seek their permission for transformation.
  • Someone specifically bars people from making fanart of their work.
  • Someone specifically bars people from writing fic set during their series.

  • We're happy to talk things through with you if we find a permission statement may not cover everything that this exchange needs! (One of the reasons the nomination period is so long is that we knew that we'd likely need time for people to contact creators to seek clarifications about permission statements.) Good luck and happy nominating!

Hey everyone! Nominations are now officially open for Recursive Exchange. Because we're using a fairly unusual format, we suggest that you read the nomination guidelines before you nominate.

The information that you will need to nominate:
  • Your email — If you don't want us contacting you for nominations clarification or if you're commenting signed-in, you can leave this blank.
  • Fanwork title — what is the fanwork called? For series you can use the series name. If the fanwork is untitled, a brief description or summary is fine, keeping in mind the tag we create will need to be 100 characters or less.
  • Fanwork creator — What username was the fanwork posted under?
  • Fanwork medium — Is it fic? Art? Vid? Gifset?
  • Fanwork link — Where can the fanwork be found?
  • Parent fandom — What fandom was the fanwork created for? Please try to use AO3 canonicals. Crossovers should be given in the format Fandom A/Fandom B, although they'll go under "Crossover Fandom" in the tagset.
  • Fanwork permission link — We need a link to a place where the creator has publicly said they're okay with further transformation of their work, preferably on the same site the work is posted on or on an account the creator has linked. (The permission link will not be included in any public tagset information, it is only used for verification.)
  • Main ship/characters — You will be matching on if you want fic about the main ship/characters or side characters, and also this will help people know if they're interested in the work. If you provide just a pairing, we will assume the characters in the pairing are the main characters. If you are nominating original works, please provide the pairing category at the beginning of the tag, and then the descriptive version of the ship tag. A properly formatted OW ship would look like "(F/F) Ghost/Nun" or "(Gen) Ghost & Nun"
  • Additional information — Any other information you think mods need about this nomination. On the google form information put in this category is only visible to the mods.

  • You can nominate using Google Form or by commenting on the nomination post if you prefer to use Dreamwidth!

If we have any questions and/or requests for further information, we will contact you (if possible) for clarification!

On another note, after talking it over among the mods, we've added another character matching category for signups:

  • I want recursive fanwork about non-canon ships in this fanwork (shipfic). — Any pairing involving characters that were not in a ship in the original fanwork. The characters should be from the fic, unless requested by the recip.

  • Please let us know if you have any questions!

    Schedule

    • Signups open (noms still open): May 17th
    • Signups close: May 26th
    • Assignments out: ideally May 29th (no later than May 30th)
    • Assignments due: July 3rd
    • Work reveals: July 10th
    • Creator reveals: July 17th

    Closing times 10pm EDT.

    Information

A gift exchange is a fanwork challenge where participants sign up to create a fanwork and in return receive a fanwork as a gift. For this exchange, participants may create/receive a fic of 1000 words or a finished piece of drawn art.

The stages of the exchange are:

    • Nominations — the mods collect information about works participants want to request and build a tagset.
    • Sign ups — once we have a tagset, participants fill out a sign up form on AO3 that includes offers and requests. For this exchange, nominations stay open during this time as we expect people will need to wait for permission before nominating for some of their desired fanworks.
    • Matching — the mods use the AO3 challenges system to match participants based on requested tags
    • Assignments/creation period — participants receive an email listing all of their assigned recipient's requests; they must create one (1) fanwork matching the requirements laid out below or else default.
    • Due date/reveals — assuming all gifts are in, the collection is revealed but kept anonymous for 1 week.

Below there's information specific to nominations, sign ups, assignments, and posting that you will definitely need. You can also find a glossary that should be helpful if you're new to talking about recursive fic and an FAQ!

Due to the complexity of nominations, we will primarily be nominating via a google form, and clarifications will primarily happen via email rather than announcement on the comm. If you don't want to or can't use google forms we have also provided instructions for submitting your nominations via Dreamwidth at the bottom of this post.

(Nominating directly to the tagset won't be allowed because we need lots of information and it's better if we collect it all at once. Also, this way you won't have to format your own tags!)

If you have any questions about nominations, please ask! We will answer comments on this post & by email.

Hello! This is a post for directing participants to places where they can find fanworks to nominate in the exchange and permission statements to go with. Essentially, a canon promo post! It's also where creators can give permission for recursion and let us know their work(s) are available.

    For creators

Aside from individual participants' DNWs on their requests, we aren't able to enforce any restrictions on the contents/format of the recursive works created for this exchange. We also can't restrict who requests/offers to create for nominated fanworks.

All recursive works posted to this exchange will be required to use the "Inspired by" feature to link back to the work they are recursing. Creators who've opted-in do not have to approve the link.

    Opting in/giving permission:

    You must provide:

    • a link to a permission statement
    • the username used to post the work(s) you're letting us know are eligible
    • the relevant fandom(s) and medium(s) — if it's a lot of fandoms, feel free to summarize.
    • links to the work(s).

This can be something as simple as, "Hi, I'm [username with link] on AO3, I post [fandom & medium] and my permission statement is found here: [link]" or you can do a full promo post.

    Additionally:

    • You can give permission for just one work, or for all works, or somewhere in between.
    • You do not need to be a participant in the exchange to opt-in on this post.
    • You are welcome to comment anonymously without identifying yourself as the creator as long as you have a permission link.
    • Posting here does not nominate your work for the exchange! Specific works still need to be nominated via the nominations process.
    • Exchange writers posting from the Dreamwidth account they use to post their exchange letters can use their comment here to give permission, and may in that case skip the permission link.

    For other participants

You can be as casual or as formal about your promo as you want, but you must include:

    • creator name
    • a link to where to find the work(s)
    • permission statement link
    • relevant fandom(s)/mediums(s) — if it's a lot of fandoms, feel free to summarize

This can be something as simple as "Hi, I'm going to nominate [title of work with link] by [creator name], a [fandom & medium]. The creator's permission statement is here: [link]" or you can do a full promo post.

    Additionally:

    • This is not a necessary step for the exchange; you can proceed directly to nominations without posting here.
    • After posting here, you still need to nominate individual works. (See the nominations guidelines)
    • Please feel free to browse and discuss/coordinate nominations, but top-level comments should be for promos only.
