We're underway with nominations, and we've emailed a few nominators with clarifications. Most of our issues have focused on permission statements. Specifically, what we've seen are permission statements that don't fully cover the kinds of transformative work people may be requesting in this event.

If you are nominating a work for this event, the transformative work statement from the creator needs to say yes to a minimum of fanart and fanfic. Even if you plan to request only fanfic, or only fanart, you may not be the only person who requests a specific nomination. Therefore, everything in the tagset must have permission granted for both mediums. And that permission needs to be granted without any caveats about needing to contact the fanwork creator before making transformative works.

Types of statements that are okay:

  • Someone says blanket yes to all transformative works.
  • Yes to fic of fic, to fanart, and to other mediums.
  • Someone says "do whatever, just link me! :D".
  • Someone says, "I'm excited to see what you make. Credit me please!"
  • Someone says, "I believe in the give me credit, don't seek permission model of fandom."
  • Someone says, "you can make recursive work of my fic, but finishing my WIPs is not allowed." This is acceptable for this event, because we ban requests to "write the end of the fic" for incomplete works.
  • Types of statements where we will ask for further clarification:

  • Someone says yes to "remixes" and fanart. Remixes and recursive fanfic aren't always the same thing. We will usually ask for the nominator to reach out and ask about whether transformative fic or "fic of fic" is okay.
  • Someone says yes to fanart, podfics, and translations but no mention of fic.
  • Someone says yes to fic of their work, with no statement about fanart.
  • Types of statements where we may reject the nomination:

  • Someone says people have to specifically contact them before making a fanwork to seek their permission for transformation.
  • Someone specifically bars people from making fanart of their work.
  • Someone specifically bars people from writing fic set during their series.

  • We're happy to talk things through with you if we find a permission statement may not cover everything that this exchange needs! (One of the reasons the nomination period is so long is that we knew that we'd likely need time for people to contact creators to seek clarifications about permission statements.) Good luck and happy nominating!
