Hello! This is a post for directing participants to places where they can find fanworks to nominate in the exchange and permission statements to go with. Essentially, a canon promo post! It's also where creators can give permission for recursion and let us know their work(s) are available.

For creators

Aside from individual participants' DNWs on their requests, we aren't able to enforce any restrictions on the contents/format of the recursive works created for this exchange. We also can't restrict who requests/offers to create for nominated fanworks.

All recursive works posted to this exchange will be required to use the "Inspired by" feature to link back to the work they are recursing. Creators who've opted-in do not have to approve the link.

Opting in/giving permission:

You must provide:

  • a link to a permission statement
  • the username used to post the work(s) you're letting us know are eligible
  • the relevant fandom(s) and medium(s) — if it's a lot of fandoms, feel free to summarize.
  • links to the work(s).

This can be something as simple as, "Hi, I'm [username with link] on AO3, I post [fandom & medium] and my permission statement is found here: [link]" or you can do a full promo post.

Additionally:

  • You can give permission for just one work, or for all works, or somewhere in between.
  • You do not need to be a participant in the exchange to opt-in on this post.
  • You are welcome to comment anonymously without identifying yourself as the creator as long as you have a permission link.
  • Posting here does not nominate your work for the exchange! Specific works still need to be nominated via the nominations process.
  • Exchange writers posting from the Dreamwidth account they use to post their exchange letters can use their comment here to give permission, and may in that case skip the permission link.

For other participants

You can be as casual or as formal about your promo as you want, but you must include:

  • creator name
  • a link to where to find the work(s)
  • permission statement link
  • relevant fandom(s)/mediums(s) — if it's a lot of fandoms, feel free to summarize

This can be something as simple as "Hi, I'm going to nominate [title of work with link] by [creator name], a [fandom & medium]. The creator's permission statement is here: [link]" or you can do a full promo post.

Additionally:

  • This is not a necessary step for the exchange; you can proceed directly to nominations without posting here.
  • After posting here, you still need to nominate individual works. (See the nominations guidelines)
  • Please feel free to browse and discuss/coordinate nominations, but top-level comments should be for promos only.

Due to the complexity of nominations, we will primarily be nominating via a google form, and clarifications will primarily happen via email rather than announcement on the comm. If you don't want to or can't use google forms we have also provided instructions for submitting your nominations via Dreamwidth at the bottom of this post.

(Nominating directly to the tagset won't be allowed because we need lots of information and it's better if we collect it all at once. Also, this way you won't have to format your own tags!)

If you have any questions about nominations, please ask! We will answer comments on this post & by email.

Information required to nominate:

  • Your email — If you don't want us contacting you for nominations clarification or if you're commenting signed-in, you can leave this blank.
  • Fanwork title — what is the fanwork called? For series you can use the series name. If the fanwork is untitled, a brief description or summary is fine, keeping in mind the tag we create will need to be 100 characters or less.
  • Fanwork creator — What username was the fanwork posted under?
  • Fanwork medium — Is it fic? Art? Vid? Gifset?
  • Fanwork link — Where can the fanwork be found?
  • Parent fandom — What fandom was the fanwork created for? Please try to use AO3 canonicals. Crossovers should be given in the format Fandom A/Fandom B, although they'll go under "Crossover Fandom" in the tagset.
  • Fanwork permission link — We need a link to a place where the creator has publicly said they're okay with further transformation of their work, preferably on the same site the work is posted on or on an account the creator has linked. (The permission link will not be included in any public tagset information, it is only used for verification.)
  • Main ship/characters — You will be matching on if you want fic about the main ship/characters or side characters, and also this will help people know if they're interested in the work. If you provide just a pairing, we will assume the characters in the pairing are the main characters. If you are nominating original works, please provide the pairing category at the beginning of the tag, and then the descriptive version of the ship tag. A properly formatted OW ship would look like "(F/F) Ghost/Nun" or "(Gen) Ghost & Nun"
  • Additional information — Any other information you think mods need about this nomination. On the google form information put in this category is only visible to the mods.

Or, if you would prefer to nominate via Dreamwidth comment, fill out the following form as many times as you want and post it in the comments of this post. Processing these will take a little longer because data entry, but please go absolutely hogwild on your nominations.

(Nominations open May 9th. Early nominations to the gform or on this post are fine, but we won't start processing nominations until May 9. Comments with nominations will stay screened until nominations open.)

Recursive Exchange is a fanwork exchange for requesting fanfiction and fanart of other fanworks! Recursive fanfiction is frequently called "fic of fic" and (in a fannish context) recursion essentially means treating a fanwork as a canon source material.

Information

A gift exchange is a fanwork challenge where participants sign up to create a fanwork and in return receive a fanwork as a gift. For this exchange, participants may create/receive a fic of 1000 words or a finished piece of drawn art.

The stages of the exchange are:

  • Nominations — the mods collect information about works participants want to request and build a tagset.
  • Sign ups — once we have a tagset, participants fill out a sign up form on AO3 that includes offers and requests. For this exchange, nominations stay open during this time as we expect people will need to wait for permission before nominating for some of their desired fanworks.
  • Matching — the mods use the AO3 challenges system to match participants based on requested tags
  • Assignments/creation period — participants receive an email listing all of their assigned recipient's requests; they must create one (1) fanwork matching the requirements laid out below or else default.
  • Due date/reveals — assuming all gifts are in, the collection is revealed but kept anonymous for 1 week.

Below there's information specific to nominations, sign ups, assignments, and posting that you will definitely need. You can also find a glossary that should be helpful if you're new to talking about recursive fic and an FAQ!

Please feel free to ask the mods lots of questions!

Hello everyone! Nominations don't start until next week (the 9th) but we wanted to get everything up early for you, especially since you might need to ask for permission for some or all of your nominations.

Please let us know if you have any questions!
